I can still remember the fear instilled into me as a boy traveling abroad and
being assured that France was full of rabid dogs. Pet travel was out of the
question for fear that Britain’s wild animals would be wiped out overnight.
Europe has come a long way since then and the arrangements for traveling with
pets are quite straightforward, although there are certain time constraints
and it pays to be informed in advance.
Prior to leaving the UK you will need to have your pet vaccinated
against rabies. This will need to be followed up with a blood test
a month later to check that the vaccination has been successful. Assuming
that it is, your pet will also need to be fitted with a microchip,
after which your pet will then be the proud owner of a PETS certificate.
In addition, you will need to obtain a health certificate for your
pet issued by DEFRA in the UK. Be aware however that the health certificate
must not be more that 15 days old at the time you enter Spain with
your pet. DEFRA in the UK will also need to issue a certificate confirming
that the area from which the pet is being brought is normally free
from disease.
Failure to fulfill any of the legal requirements could result in your
pet being placed in quarantine for up to six months which can be a
costly and stressful time for owner and pet alike. There is a good
deal of helpful information on the subject to be found on the British
Consulate’s web site or alternatively you can call the UK government’s
PETS advice line on 00 44 (0)870 2411710.
Taking a pet back to the UK is now possible and relatively straightforward
although, once again, you should start the procedure in Spain at least
one month before your departure in order to obtain the necessary paperwork.
